Special Event & Tent Permits

A special event permit will be required for any open-air gatherings and temporary sales operations open to the public located on private property within the Town limits. A permit is required for any temporary tent 900 square feet and larger.

Requirements

Applications for special events or temporary tents will need to be submitted at least three weeks prior to the event date to allow for adequate review and processing time.

Submittal Requirements

  • A site plan showing the dimensions and locations of all permanent and proposed temporary structures, the capacity and location of restroom facilities, and a parking plan which clearly shows all on-site and overflow parking (if necessary) and proposed traffic flow and necessary traffic control devices at the event location.
  • Written permission from property owner allowing event to take place, if applicable.
  • Fire resistance certificate or inspection by an approved party (per NFPA 101-11.11.2.2).

Special Event Regulations

  • Should any temporary structures, such as tents, be required for the event, the applicant will be responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and meeting all requirements of applicable building codes.
  • The Town may approve open air gatherings or temporary sales operations for a period not to exceed 12 days per calendar year on any given site.

Temporary Tent Regulations

  • A tent may be used as a temporary accessory structure to any existing structure located in a nonresidential zoning district. Any such use shall be limited to 90 days in a calendar year and shall be conditioned upon the issuance and payment of a permit. The tent must meet all setback requirements of the zoning district and comply with all applicable building codes.
  • All tents erected shall be maintained in a good and clean condition.
  • The ground enclosed in the tent and within ten feet of the tent must be clear of vegetation and combustible materials. Areas necessary for support equipment are an exception (per NFPA 101-11.11.4.1).
  • Any adjacent tents are required to be spaced a minimum of 10 feet between stake lines to provide an area for means of egress (per NFPA 101-11.11.3.1).
  • Smoking is not allowed in tents and “NO SMOKING” signs must be posted (per NFPA 101-11.11.4.2).
  • Fire extinguishers are required. Contact a licensed fire extinguisher dealer for mounting and placement (per NFPA 101-11.11.5).
  • No cooking of any kind is permitted under any tent.

Inspections

The fire authority having jurisdiction will conduct a life safety inspection prior to the event start. Inspections should be requested for a minimum of three days prior to the event.
